One, two, three, sound check, one, two, three. Good afternoon and welcome to the downtown subcommittee meeting for August 13th, 2026. Our third last meeting of this term of council, actually our last meeting of this term, or second last meeting of this term, I should say, sorry. There's three left this year, including today's meeting. Gonna call the meeting to order. We have quorum today, and so I won't go over the list, but know that quorum is in the room and staff have confirmed that everyone's here. We don't have any ceremonial activities for today, so I'll move right to the approval of the agenda. Are there any discussions on today's agenda? If not, I'll have a mover and a seconder to approve the agenda as presented. Moved by Member Braithwaite, seconded by Member Moran. Are there any discussions, questions about the agenda? Nope, not seeing any. By show of hands, all those in favor? That is everyone, thank you so much. We're on to declarations of conflicts of interest. Does anyone have one they wanna declare? I'm not seeing any. We're on to item five, so fast. The adoption of the previous meeting minutes for June 11th, 2026. Can I please have a mover and a seconder to adopt the minutes? Thank you. more or less given up addressing environmental issues. We 've seen that in responding to the industrial fallout that we're seeing locally, and the Feds have literally come out and said, Mark Carney, our prime minister, has come out and said that emissions are going to go up because of the policies he's choosing to take for us. One of those policies was to extend the timeline for DeFasco's decarbonization project that was promised to the citizens of Hamilton. This is a really emotional topic for a lot of folks because this is about the air we breathe every single day, but DeFasco is the largest single point source of emissions in the province of Ontario. When we're talking about community emissions and you see 70% of all community emissions come from one company or one sector, it's alarming and it can be extremely demotivating for the average Hamiltonian to see upper levels of government not respond to this crisis and not hone in on a clear solution that the city of Hamilton has been pushing for. You know, I want to commend City Council for unanimously asking the province not to renew the site-specific standards for steel locally. Of course, we assumed that there was going to be a technical standard to follow that, and the province is still dragging their heels. Ultimately, what we're looking at here is a continual march towards increased emissions and further degradation of our local environment. The city of Hamilton has been doing an incredible amount of work to a …

Thank you. We're on to the Thank you. And can I just Thank you. and Beach Road. Three sides of this are residential, existing residential neighborhood. The Beach Road interface is one of many interfaces in the city of Hamilton that have developed over the years with an industrial and residential shared road line. This means that you have sensitive land uses abutting, let's call them industrial or noxious emitters, people that are classified as industrial facilities. This is not special for this site. This is a common evolution of the city of Hamilton. It's the Hamilton story. We've seen this all over the city and it's how the city has developed and we have to deal with the available land that's there when you have situations like this. You can see here on this map it even has a label saying the former Lloyd George School. This was a school that was erected in I think 1918 and was an operating school for 85 years. It was deemed surplus by the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board in I think 2003. And the reason for that surplus is well documented on Hamilton Spectator articles and staff reports it was nothing to do with pollution. It was deemed surplus because they didn't have enough pupil enrollment as a public school. And it was sold off for redevelopment opportunities where it sat for quite some time as a vacant abandoned school. You can see here it's sort of hoarded here with the the city of Hamilton. This is what it looks like today. As phalt parking lots and trailer s …

Thank you. Sound check. One, two, three. Sound check. One, two, three. Sound check. One, two, three. Thank you. everybody come out and drive by you wouldn't even it's all trees and and animals and you wouldn't even think of it as anything other than that. You should take a look I just have more pictures but it was hard to get them going. That's okay I really do appreciate you coming and I think you tied the links to the biodiversity strategy and some of those other cities strategies that we're talking about as well in consideration of that when we think about making that kind of decision at a future date looking at some of those factors I know part of the direction for this is looking at a potential connection to the existing kind of trails behind some of the properties what would it take to maintain a connection there even if that is a long-term goal are there other things that you think should be considered in terms of looking at now that it's not going to be a road we've maybe made that decision a little late but we've decided okay we're not going to expand this road anymore how do we complete this community if that's the question as opposed to you know how do we sell this land but how do we complete the community what should happen here how do you think the city should ask that question or how would you like you and your neighbors be involved well my age I just like things just the way they are I don't not good on change but I think my the next delegate has some suggestio …
