New Tecumseth committees review sidewalk, speed limit policies; no decisions made

No formal decisions were made at New Tecumseth's recent committee meetings, but two advisory bodies took up policy proposals that could affect how residents walk and drive. The Traffic Advisory Committee reviewed draft rules for sidewalk construction and urban speed limits, while the Environmental Advisory Committee heard an update on the Honda Habitat Lands project. A Committee of the Whole meeting on Aug. 21 was purely procedural, with no substantive items on its agenda.

Traffic Advisory Committee (Aug. 20)

The Traffic Advisory Committee met Aug. 20 to review a summary report from May 14, 2026, which included a recommendation to approve a Sidewalk Planning, Design, Construction & Maintenance Policy (ENG-POL-003-2026). The draft policy would require sidewalks on both sides of collector and arterial roads, with a minimum width of 1.5 metres and compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).

The committee also discussed a draft Urban Speed Limit Policy (ENG-POL-004-2026). Under the draft, the default speed limit on urban roads would remain 50 km/h, but the policy would allow 40 km/h zones in community safety areas, school zones, and on arterial, collector, and local roads where conditions warrant.

Both items were listed as discussion items only. No vote or decision was recorded, and minutes have not yet been published. Residents who wish to provide input can pre-register with the Committee Secretary by emailing kwallace@newtecumseth.ca.

Environmental Advisory Committee (Aug. 11)

The Environmental Advisory Committee met Aug. 11 for an informational session. Members received a summary report from the committee's June 2 meeting, heard a presentation from the Planning Department on the Honda Habitat Lands project, and discussed social media metrics and advertising costs related to EarthFest 2026.

The meeting was described as primarily informational, with no formal decisions scheduled. Minutes have not yet been published.

Committee of the Whole (Aug. 21)

The Committee of the Whole meeting on Aug. 21 contained only standard procedural items, including confirmation of the agenda, disclosures of pecuniary interest, determination of items requiring separate discussion, adoption of items not requiring separate discussion, and adjournment. The agenda listed general categories such as Office of the CAO, Strategic Services, and Community Services, but provided no specific details, dollar amounts, or project names. The document appears to be a template or placeholder with no substantive content.

New Tecumseth council set to weigh Tottenham Community Week funding, Beeton rezoning for 93 townhouses

New Tecumseth council and committee meetings on July 13 and 15 covered funding for Tottenham Community Week, a proposed 93-townhouse development in Beeton, and the future of the Sports Dome and Indoor Pool feasibility studies. Minutes from all three meetings have not yet been published, so outcomes are not yet confirmed.

Tottenham Community Week funding

Council's July 13 agenda included a request to approve an additional $2,331.79 for the Tottenham Community Week committee to cover municipal permitting costs. The agenda also listed By-law 2026-065 to adopt Official Plan Amendment No. 5 and By-law 2026-064 for a Connecting Link Road rehabilitation project. A skatepark feasibility report and a post-mission report on the County of Simcoe Japan Mission were also on the agenda.

Sports Dome and Indoor Pool reconsideration

The Committee of the Whole on July 13 was set to consider a motion to reverse a previous decision to defer the Sports Dome Phase 2 and Indoor Pool feasibility studies. The motion would direct staff to proceed with detailed design for the recreation projects. The same agenda included a request to investigate a potential twin city agreement with a Japanese city, a request for exemption from the Fence By-law at 43 Coburn Crescent, a Community Improvement Plan Façade Improvement Grant at 5 Victoria Street E., and a Traffic Calming Guideline Update.

Beeton rezoning: 93 townhouses on 8th Line

A Committee of the Whole Planning Public Meeting on July 15 held a second public meeting for a zoning by-law amendment application (DEV 371) for a 3.8-hectare vacant parcel at 8th Line in Beeton. The applicant proposes to rezone the land from Special Study Area and Environmental Protection to a site-specific Low-Rise Residential zone to permit 93 townhouse units on private roads.

Proposed site-specific zoning exceptions include a reduced lot area of 140 m², increased lot coverage of 60%, and reduced setbacks. The application also includes an adjustment to the Environmental Protection zone boundary. The meeting was intended to update the public on changes since the initial 2018 meeting. Council was not making a decision at this meeting; staff will continue to review the application and address comments before bringing forward a recommendation report.
